Roger Mason Obituary

Roger Mason, age 69, of Grayson, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 11,
2022. He was born August 11, 1953, a son of the late Roger and Louberl Stegall Mason. In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael David Mason in 2011.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Rowe Mason, whom he married on April 24,
1976, his daughter, Kristen Brooke Mason (Travis), five grandchildren, Tanner Christian Mason
(Ilicia), Austin Michael Mason, Micayla Mason Greene (Josh), Bennett Cole Mason-Littleton,
Brooklyn Faith Mason and one great-grandson, Christian Joseph Mason.

Also surviving is one brother, Bernie Mason (Marilyn) of Ashland, brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Garry Rowe, Marsha Maggard (Shannon), Billy Rowe (Atonya); nieces and
nephews, Greg (Amy) Mason, Griffin (Danielle) Mason, Alicia Rowe (Travis), Tina Rowe
(Duane), Lacie Rowe Edwards (Christopher), Dawn Maggard Porter (Shannon), Crystal
Maggard Ody, Cori Maggard Holbrook (Bill), Justin Rowe and Morgan Rowe Schweizer (Jesse).

Following his 1971 graduation from Sandy Hook High School, Roger attended Hobart
Welding School. He worked as a union pipefitter/welder and was a member of the Plumbers &
Steamfitters Local #421, Raleigh-Durham, NC. Throughout his career, he worked as a welder,
foreman, and superintendent in the Coal Mining Industry and was Mining Manager for
International Coal Group (ICG). He retired in 2019 and enjoyed spending time on the farm he
dreamed of as a child when he spent summer breaks from school learning much about farming
from his Uncle Bill and Uncle Arnold. He got so much enjoyment from his horses and cattle,
loved taking the grandkids to Elkins Creek Horse Camp and loved to travel. He had traveled
through 49 states and five Canadian provinces on his motorcycles and considered it a privilege
to guide groups of friends on his trips. He had made two trips West this summer, racking up
about 9,000 miles on the bike and already had plans for trips next summer.

Roger was a member of First Baptist Church of Grayson, a past member of Sandy Hook
First Baptist where he attended as a child, became a Christian at a young age and influenced
his parents to become members of the church. He was a Bible scholar, had read the Bible
through many times and had an amazing understanding of it. He was a man of strong morals
and good ethics. He was a member of Hepburn Lodge #576, an honorary member of Trimble
Lodge #145, had attained his York Rite and Scottish Rite and was a Thirty-Second Degree
Mason and a member of the Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Kentucky
Motorcycle Association and Night Watchmen Chapter of the Widows Sons Masonic Riding
Association and was instrumental in the establishment of Night Watchmen Benefit Rides to help
send local kids to Robert C. Webb Conservation Camp.

Roger loved people, never saw a stranger, and left a trail of friends wherever he
traveled. He had a contagious laugh that could be heard as he shared stories about his travel or
witnessed a prank that he had carefully orchestrated. He had recently begun working for Tim
Short Auto, picking up cars from Michigan, Milwaukee, Pennsylvania, North Carolina,
Tennessee and various other places driving long distances in a day. His favorite part of the trips
was the friends he made along the way and fellowship with others as they made their trips.

He loved his family and was so proud of them. He had taken three of his grandchildren
on motorcycle rides out West and had hoped someday to ride with his three grandsons, with
them on their own bikes. Although that will never happen, Grandad will surely have a smile on
his face as his grandsons ride with him, leading the procession to his final resting place.
