Garnetta Davis (Holbrook) Holbrook

Garnetta Davis Holbrook, age 87, of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, KY surrounded by her adoring children.  

Born December 16, 1932 in Elliott County, she was the daughter of the late Harve and Dixie Lee Holbrook.  Harve had to leave KY for work so Garnetta traveled a lot throughout her early childhood.  She often told about riding the bus to downtown Sciotoville when she was only 10 years old to go to the Dime store then watch a movie with her younger siblings.  She and her siblings were not only family, but also the best of friends and loved spending time together.

In 1955 she wed the love of her life, Harry Holbrook.  Together they created a life in Sandy Hook raising three children.  Garnetta was a Christian and lived a life without prejudice or judgement. She worked her career as a social worker, retiring from the Kentucky State Government.  

Garnetta was a bright and cheerful lady that enjoyed colorful clothing, makeup, especially her lipstick, flowers, and people.  She has been a true socialite in Elliott County for many years with kind words and encouragement for everyone she encountered.  Family, friends, and neighbors were always welcomed into her home or onto her front porch, greeted with a smile. 

She could always be found throughout the community she loved.  Garnetta was a proud supporter of all Elliott County High School sports, Democratic gatherings, and the Tobacco Festival to name a few.  She loved sitting at the Frosty Freeze visiting with patrons and enjoying a Diet Pepsi.  Garnetta was so proud that her sons and two of her grandsons followed in Harry’s footsteps and became Union Pipefitters. All of which are members of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 248.

She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends; often visiting Gatlinburg, shopping malls, and restaurants.  Most trips were capped off with a Crisp Dairy Treat tangerine twist.  

Garnetta loved Facebook and the connection it provided to family and friends.  She loved posting pictures of her grandchildren, reading posts, seeing families grow,  hitting the like button and bragging on all her friend’s posts.  She kept daily checks to see how everyone was doing because she cared about so many people.

Everyone enjoyed hearing her stories from years past, yet in recent years it was obvious that she was missing Harry more.  Garnetta never got in a hurry and her passing was no different. When she was ready, she reunited with her husband, but only after gathering her children for a few last sleepovers.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Harry Holbrook; siblings Lucille Dailey, Daisy Lee Williams, and Clay Green Holbrook; and son-in-law James Paul Ferguson.

Garnetta was survived by her cherished children, Joy Ferguson, Dale (Liz) Holbrook, and John (Sandy) Holbrook all of Sandy Hook;  grandchildren, Alex Holbrook, Ben Holbrook, Hillary Gesso, Macray Holbrook, Jami Ferguson, Jaclyn Ferguson, Hunter Holbrook, and Zoe Holbrook; great-grandchildren, Christopher Holbrook, Colton Holbrook, Ella Gesso, Lila Gesso, Harrison Holbrook, Dylan Hale, Kaden Garvin, Rylee Easterling, and Sofia Burns;  siblings Judie Holbrook, Harvey Holbrook, and Christine Morgan; many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends that will sadly mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00pm, Friday, September 11, 2020, at Lewis and Ferguson Funeral Home in Sandy Hook, KY with Reggie Dickerson officiating.  Burial will follow at Elliott County Memory Gardens.  Visitation will be from 6:00-9:00pm on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at the funeral home.  

Pallbearers include Lee Howard, Pat Brown, Hunter Holbrook, Ben Holbrook, Macray Holbrook, Dylan Hale, Charles Duvall, and John Gesso.
