Ellis Cornett Obituary

Ellis Cornett of Sandy Hook passed away peacefully on March 17th, 2024.  He was born September 18, 1940 in Gilley, Kentucky.  Ellis was the fifth of nine children born to the late Columbus and Elizabeth Baker Cornett.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers Astor and Estill Cornett and a sister, Pauline Hensley.

Ellis Is survived by his loving and caring wife of 57 years, Virginia Ann Addington Cornett; daughter, Beth (Michael) Harper of Sandy Hook, KY; grandson, Grady Harper of Sandy Hook, KY; brothers, Ray (Sharon Cornett of Raccoon, KY, and Raymond Cornett of Columbus, IN;  sisters, Clara Ison of Cumberland, KY, Irene (Jack) McKendrick of Louisville, KY, and Bessie Dean of Goshen, OH; as well as many nieces and nephews that will sadly mourn his passing.

Ellis was a graduate of Cumberland Junior College where he played basketball on the college team.  College is also where he was introduced to Jesus, accepted him as his Lord and Savior.  After college, he joined the United States Army.  While stationed in Germany, the Berlin Wall was being built.  When he returned home from Germany, he moved to Washington D.C. where he worked at Arlington Cemetery engraving monuments. Ellis accepted a position as a game warden and returned to eastern Kentucky, specifically Elliott County where he met his future wife Virginia Addington.  Together, Ellis and Virginia built Infinite Possibilities Youth Center.  This was a place Ellis enjoyed spending his Wednesday nights with the youth of Elliott County for more than twenty years.  He valued their time shooting basketball and was humbled witnessing the relationships youth built with Jesus Christ.  Ellis loved mining coal.  He had various positions working for the Addington Brothers.  He ended his work career at the age of 70 as the General Manager of Green Valley Landfill.  His retirement was spent mowing, gardening, and enjoying the companionship of his grandson, Grady.
