Obituary

The last living child of Elijah and Mollie Gillum Dickerson, Delmaine D. Dickerson slipped from this life on September 15, 2023 surrounded by his immediate family after visitation from a host of family and friends.  Just like his work ethic he left his earthly home past 5 o’clock at 5:24 pm at St. Claire Medical Center when he felt his work was done.

Delmaine was welcomed into this world by his brothers and sisters on August 11, 1940:  Wilson, Earl, Beecher, Gene, Odell, Glendale, Inez, John, June, Buel, and later a baby brother Joel T.  All the family preceded in death were there to welcome him to his Heavenly home.

Delmaine loved life and most certainly laughter.  Having the philosophy of “every day is a gift and make the most of it” gave him a hallmark trait of enjoying every task in life no matter how difficult or complex.  He was always having a good time at any given task and was able to make the most ordinary seem special.   He loved his church, his brothers and sisters in Christ, and strangers that have yet to be a friend—always there to lend a helping hand no matter the job or situation. Never for a lack of words—he was always able to start a conversation with anyone he may meet.  He would worry and tend to someone he thought was in need doing his best to provide a helpful hand.

The times he enjoyed most were playing cards, checkers, and horse shoes with family and friends.  He was always up for a game of Rook, Set Back, or Rummy at a moment’s notice.  Playing a few fierce games of horse shoes and Rook provided some very prized although plastic trophies, not to mention the bragging rights.  Above all—checkers was the most beloved game enjoyed by all the siblings.  The love for checkers was passed on from Elijah to his sons providing them with hours of laughter and entertainment making them a difficult bunch to beat.

Delmaine married Carole Williams on December 29, 1961.  They had 2 sons: John Brett Dickerson and Eric Dale Dickerson.  Delmaine was definitely a family man putting his family first above his needs.  The love he had for his boys and wife were beyond measure.  This most definitely included his grandchildren and daughter-in-law—always specifically thanking her for making him “Papaw D.”

Living in Elliott County and providing for a family can sometimes be difficult.  This may require some creative solutions to carve out a living.  Delmaine’s endeavors included: union carpenter, filling station owner/operator, Armco employee, farming, raising cattle, backhoe operator, Montgomery Ward Catalog Store owner/operator, owning/operating two coal trucks, Game and Wildlife Officer, insurance agent, and union pipe fitter.  When he decided to run for Elliott County Circuit Court Clerk he worked hard to win and carried every precinct.  This was by far his favorite title and retired after 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, as well as his in-laws: Emma Lee Johnson Dickerson, Imogene Howard Dickerson, Irene Holbrook Dickerson, John Joel Kegley, Tennyson Boggs, Henry Townsend, and Joann Griffith Dickerson.

Delmaine is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years Carole Dickerson, sons: John Brett Dickerson of Sandy Hook, Eric Dale and wife Tamara Gail Ison Dickerson, grandchildren: Connor Eric Dickerson, Emily Kate Dickerson, Hannah Gail Dickerson, and Jackson Dale Dickerson of Morehead, Kentucky.  Sister-in-laws Nett Dickerson of Punta Gorda, Florida, JoAnn Dickerson of Sandy Hook, and Audrey Dickerson of Sandy Hook, Kentucky.  Also survived by a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces.

His laughter and jokes will be missed by all his family and friends.  Our hearts are comforted knowing he is in the arms of our Lord and Savior and his Heavenly family.

Funeral will be conducted Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home at Sandy Hook, KY with Bro. Tim Kegley and Pastor Charlie Joh nson officiating. Burial will be at Elliott County Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.
