Clarence Adkins Obituary

Clarence Wayne Adkins, age 77, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, went
to be with the Lord on April 10, 2022. Clarence was the son of the late Henry Adkins and the
late Onie Hayes Adkins. Clarence was an extremely devoted son and had a strong sense of
responsibility. While attending Berea College, he was contacted by Harvard University and
offered a free scholarship to attend graduate school there. He turned down this opportunity in
order to return home to care for his widowed mother and to serve as an educator in his local
community.
Clarence was an educator at heart. He was an elementary teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary.
He was also the principal at Star Elementary, Hitchins Elementary, and Elliott County High
School. He spent the majority of his career as a school administrator serving as Director of
Pupil Personnel, Special Education Director, School Health Coordinator, and Food Service
Coordinator. He truly cared about the well-being of all the students he served, and he believed
that every child deserves the chance to succeed.
Clarence was a Mason for over fifty years and a past Master of Hepburn Lodge 576 F & AM. He
accepted the Lord as his personal savior and said he was ready to go to his heavenly home.
Clarence was devoted to his family. He loved his immediate and extended family, and he told
stories about his ancestors to his children. Clarence was married to the love of his life, Betty
Ruth Ison Adkins, for over fifty years. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary on June 12,
2021. He was a loving and supportive father and father-in-law to Brian Adkins and Miranda Hill
Adkins and Angela Adkins Campbell and Mark Campbell. His pride and joy came from being a
grandfather to Michael Gage Campbell, Kate Elizabeth Adkins, and Claire Ann Adkins. He truly
admired and respected his older brothers and always looked up to them. He was preceded in
death by his brothers Ralph Adkins, Owen Adkins, Charles Adkins and sister-in-law Jean
Stinson Adkins. He is survived by his brother Lawrence Adkins and sisters-in-law Barbara
Peters Adkins and Jean Booth Adkins. He was a proud uncle to many nieces and nephews
and always looked forward to their visits.
The family would like to thank Doctor Henry Adkins, the University of Kentucky doctors and
staff, and St. Claire Home Health for their outstanding care.
Pallbearers are all of his beloved nieces, nephews, and his faithful friends from over the years.
